Packing Tape Sculpture:

In this project, we will be creating a sculpture of ourselves. It will be made out of tape.

The Assignment:

You must work in a group of 3-5 people- no more, no less.
You all must contribute a body part to the finished sculpture.
The body must be in an active pose-it cannot be static-like a gingerbread man. If that is what you turn in, you will earn a “0”.
You must include a prop of some kind- it can be made of tape, or it can be real.
Take your sculpture somewhere and photograph it. This is what will be graded. Email me the photo. I must have a digital copy of your photo.

Steps

1. Your group will be given six rolls of tape- that’s it! Use them judiciously.

2. Everyone will be contributing a body part to the sculpture. Keep that in mind.

3. The casts of the body parts are made by first moving the body into the desired position. Wrap the tape around that body part STICKY SIDE UP. DO NOT PUT THE STICKY SIDE DOWN!

4. After the body part is completely wrapped in tape, wrap it again with the sticky side down.

5. Wrap it again, sticky side down.

6. Now, carefully use scissors to cut the tape off. Tape the seam closed after it is off the person.

7. When all the parts are completed, assemble them together.

Warnings

  • Since we are making a self cast please follow the suggestions below:
    1. It is not recommended to cast your own head in tape because it is a dangerous process that risks suffocation. A better alternative is to use the head of a mannequin.
    2. The casting will work best if it's done in three parts: A: Legs and torso. B: Mid-section. C: Arms.
    3. Don't wrap the tape too tight or it will be hard to cut away and will also cut off circulation causing numbness.
    4. When releasing yourself from the cast use scissors (not an exacto knife).
